Shipley's Choice – A Wonderful Place to Live!

Shipley’s Choice, is a community of single family homes in the Greater Severna Park area north of Annapolis, MD. Eight hundred and fifty-four of the community homes belong to the Shipley’s Choice Homeowners Association, Inc. (SCHOA) that preserves homeownership value through covenants enforcement. SCHOA annual dues are a modest $75, even since its founding in 1983. The SCHOA Board of Directors are elected from SCHOA residents and serve two year terms before re-election, roughly half of the positions each year being subject to the SCHOA election process.

The neighborhood is divided into two main community organizations:

  1. Shipley’s Choice Home Owners Association (SCHOA) which represents residents of Sections 3 through 12.
  2. Shipley’s Choice Community Association (SCCA) which represents residents of Sections 1 & 2 and is separate from SCHOA. The SCCA website may be accessed at www.shipleyschoice.org.

Shipley’s Choice is ideally located in Anne Arundel (AA) County, MD; about 10 miles north of Annapolis, MD, the sailing boat capital of the United States and the seat of Maryland state government. Annapolis is also home to the United States Naval Academy and St. John’s College, and the city is a historic city preserving its naval heritage and colonial architecture homes. The community of Shipley’s Choice is on the western edge of Severna Park, MD, where the public school district includes the Shipley’s Choice Elementary School, number 1 in the AA County; Severna Park Middle School, and the Severna Park High School. Shipley’s Choice is just 1½ miles from Exit 10 of Interstate 97, 17 miles from Baltimore, 34 miles from Washington, D.C., and 8 miles from the Thurgood Marshall Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport.

The Shipley’s Choice community features a walkable location for the Shipley’s Choice Elementary School and the privately managed, Shipley’s Choice Swim & Tennis Club, Inc. facilities of a club house, two swimming pools, a children’s pool, and four tennis courts. SCHOA’s Beautification Committee continues to add mini-park like settings on SCHOA common areas, supports a Tot-Lot, and “good neighbor” beautification efforts for vine and downed tree removal. SCHOA sponsors the Shipley’s Choice website, the Shipley’s VOICE monthly newsletter, and the Shipley’s Choice Garden Club (SCGC). The SCGC directs and maintains the floral areas around the Shipley’s Choice monument entrances and the mini-gardens in the community.

There are multiple opportunities for SCHOA residents to join a service organization in the area and the SCHOA families are within the drawing area for the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association (GSPAA) sports leagues and teams participation.

Residents of SCHOA homes in Shipley’s Choice have homes that are primarily two story with two car garages on well treed lots of a ¼ acre or more. AA County is responsible for snow removal from the streets, street repairs, and trash removal, including recycling trash and greens removal at the curb from containers.

The SCHOA residents are professionals usually working within the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis triangle, and some include Columbia, MD and the Fort Meade, MD area for their employment. Some residents have chosen to retire here in Shipley’s Choice, partly because of extended family ties in the area, but also because of ease of transportation using the BWI Airport, AMTRAK train station at BWI Airport, ease of travel to a light rail connection to Baltimore locations, and access to the Interstate highway system for skiing in western MD and PA ski lodges or the ocean side beaches at Ocean City, MD and in the Delaware beaches. Boating access to the Chesapeake Bay and the Seven River is through private marinas and boat rentals for the occasional boater.

SCHOA provides many “good neighbor” opportunities for its residents to participate in keeping Shipley’s Choice a great place to live. Upkeep of individuals homes is encouraged and there are annual clean up events. SCHOA also works with the local Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts in their community activities.
